Beyond Rationality Workshop 1

Introduction

The recent banking crisis and the rise of religious fundamentalism in a political cause have prompted people to reflect on the seeming irrationality of ways of thinking relevant to these events. These examples join a host of other occasions when the thoughts and actions of people seem to be irrational. Setting aside 'insanity' there seems to be a rich field of apparent intellectual and practical muddle to explore. Of course, 'One person's irrationality is another's rationality'. The project of this workshop is to initiate studies of the discursive practices within which what seem to be acts of folly are defined, planned and executed.
