The John W. Kluge Center awarded Dr Vanni Pettinà | a Kluge Fellowship for 2011-2012 for his project "From the Nationalist Compromise to the Insurrection: Cuba and the United States, 1933-1959"
During his stay Dr. Pettinà will develop two aspects of its previous research. Firstly, he will focus on the breakdown of the Cuban political system during the 1940's. In doing so, he will try to retrace the impact the Cold War had on Harry Truman's policies toward Cuba after 1948, and how these changes accelerated the Cuban domestic crisis. Secondly, he will refine the links between the decolonization process, the post-Stalinist Soviet Foreign policy in the periphery and the Eisenhower administration's hostile reaction to Third World nationalism.
The John W. Kluge Center| at the Library of Congress announced the appointment of 12 post-doctoral fellows, who will conduct humanistic and social-science research in the Library's large and varied collections. The Kluge Center helps the fellows make substantial use of the Library's collections, which include books, manuscripts, maps, films, recorded sound, music, newspapers and periodicals, prints and photographs and the world's largest law library. In addition, the Kluge Center helps the fellows connect with the Library's specialized staff and the intellectual and policymaking communities of Washington, D.C. Toward the end of their five- to 11-month residential fellowships, the fellows will give public lectures at the Library concerning their research projects. The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research in the John W. Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months.
Established in 2000 through an endowment of $60 million from John W. Kluge, the Center is located in the splendid Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. The Kluge Center furnishes attractive work and discussion space for Kluge Chair holders, for distinguished visiting scholars, and for post-doctoral Fellows supported by other private foundation gifts. Residents have easy access to the Library's specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-lingual research is particularly welcome. Among the collections available to researchers are the world's largest law library and outstanding multi-lingual collections of books and periodicals. Deep special collections of manuscripts, maps, music, films, recorded sound, prints and photographs are also available.
