Background
Since 2004, the Finance Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), have embarked on joint investor seminars to promote ASEAN as an attractive investment destination and to brand ASEAN as an asset class through an annual investors roadshow. These roadshows, known as the ASEAN Finance Ministers' Investor Seminars (AFMIS), have previously been held in major investment centres such as London, New York, Hong Kong and Dubai.
This year's AFMIS builds on the success of previous years' seminars held in major global investment centres. The theme of this year's event, "Discovering Tomorrow's ASEAN", will focus on the opportunities afforded to the global community by ASEAN financial markets given the shift in global economic growth prospects to the region post the global financial crisis.
It is envisaged that AFMIS will provide an excellent opportunity for investors and intermediaries to engage in dialogue with the Finance Ministers in the region. Further, the event will offer a valuable platform to promote greater intra-regional investment and collaboration, enhance awareness of opportunities in the region and act as a focal point for financial market players to explore mutual opportunities for cross-border business and expansion.
Visiting Senior Fellow Dr. Munir Majid moderated the Ministers' Panel at the ASEAN Finance Ministers' Investor Seminar on 30 November 2010 in Kuala Lumpur. The discussion over two hours focused on:
1. Economic prospects for the ASEAN and individual economies against the background of an uncertain external environment.
2. Enhancement of domestic demand and greater ASEAN real economic integration.
3. Management of capital inflows and progress of the trigger mechanism of currency support under the Chiang Mai Initiative
4. Progress in capital market integration, particularly implementation of the plan of the ASEAN Capital Market Forum, including the ASEAN exchange link
5. Lessons ASEAN draws from the Global Financial Crisis
6. The level and quality of ASEAN participation in G-20 meetings.
This seminar was held on 30 November 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
