    Peter Beresford OBE is Professor of Social Policy and Director of the Centre for Citizen Participation at Brunel University. He is also Chair of Shaping Our Lives, the national service user organisation and network and a long term user of mental health services.

    He is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS), and a former trustee of the Social Care Institute for Excellence and current trustee of the Skills Academy for Social Care. Peter is a member of the Department of Health Ministerial Reference Group for Social care, the DH Advisory Board for the Transformation of Adult Social Care, of the National Institute for Health Research and of NIHR Involve.

    His particular interests are participation and participatory research approaches, particularly in relation to health, social care, disabled people, mental health service users/survivors, welfare reform and palliative care.

    Gary Craig is Visiting Professor at the University of Durham and Professor Emeritus of Social Justice and Associate Fellow at the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation at the University of Hull.

    He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences. His research interests include 'race' and ethnicity, community development, local governance, poverty and deprivation, children and young people and contemporary forms of slavery.

    Eric Emerson is Professor of Disability and Health Research at Lancaster University (UK) and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. In 2008 he received a Distinguished Career Award for his contribution to research by the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability (IASSID).

    He is currently responsible for liaison between IASSID and the World Health Organisation. Eric has been a member of several advisory groups to government and non-government organizations and has written several books and over 140 articles in academic and professional journals on issues related to the health and social inequalities faced by disabled children and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities.     Shereen Hussein is a Senior Research Fellow at the Social Care Workforce Research Unit, King's College London. She is a demographer and statistician with strong applied experience in a number of domains including marriage and family structure, child morbidity and population ageing. She holds a Ph.D in Statistical demography from the London School of Economics and an MSc in Medical Demography from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

    Shereen possesses a unique range of skills and experiences in both quantitative and qualitative research design and has worked with a number of international health and population organisations, such as the Population Council, United Nations and has been recently commissioned by the World Bank to produce a review of long term care. She has recently completed two complex studies; one related to the protection of vulnerable adults and the other on the profile, experiences and expectations of migrants working in the English care sector for the Department of Health and has expertise in long term care and workforce implications.

    Ian Russell is a career health care researcher who specialises in the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of pragmatic randomised trials. He was an early protagonist of patient-reported outcome measures and systematic reviews to aggregate the findings of trials. Since returning to Wales in 2002, he has established two Clinical Trials Units and registered both with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. The North Wales Organisation for Randomised Trials in Health (NWORTH) specialises in trials in dementia care; and the West Wales Organisation for Rigorous Trials in Health (WWORTH) specialises in trials in secondary and emergency care.

  • Dr Deborah Rutter, Social Care Institute for Excellence
    Author of methods review on systematic reviewing
    Deborah is a Senior Research Analyst at Social Care Institute for Excellence, where she has an organisation-wide brief to support the production and dissemination of high quality research. She is leading the development of SCIE's systematic review and systematic mapping guidance, and supporting SCIE's work on the role of social care and social work in reducing health inequalities.

    Deborah has recently set up the national Social Care Research Ethics Committee on behalf of National Research Ethics Service and Department of Health. She has a PhD in social anthropology (London) deriving from study in Nepal, and spent almost a decade as a research fellow at Imperial College Medical School, Dept of Community Psychiatry, researching participant and provider views for multi-faceted evaluations, including the evaluation of the Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder pilot programmes in HM Prison Service.

    She has researched and published on user involvement in mental health services and in change management, community-based personality disorder services, treatment services for crack cocaine users, prevalence of dual diagnosis, risk management strategies and qualitative research methods. She is a trustee of a national social exclusion charity, specialising in mental health and youth services.

    Bob Woods has been a practising clinical psychologist working with older people for over 30 years, training and working initially in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, before moving to London where he worked at the Institute of Psychiatry and University College. Since 1996, he has been Professor of Clinical Psychology of Older People at Bangor University, where he currently acts as head of the Institute of Medical and Social Care Research and the Bangor Trials Unit.

    He is Director of NEURODEM Cymru, the dementias and neurodegenerative diseases research network for Wales, and is an Alzheimer's Society Ambassador. One main focus of his research concerns the development and evaluation of therapeutic approaches for people with dementia and their care-givers, and this has led to a number of studies carried out in care homes, including several using randomised controlled designs.
