  • Professor John Carpenter, University of Bristol
    John Carpenter is Professor of Social Work and Applied Social Science, Centre for Research and Health Care at the University of Bristol. Professor Carpenter us a registered social worked, chartered psychologist and family therapist. He was Professor of Social Work and Director of the Centre for Applied Social and Community Studies at Durham University (1997-2005) and Senior Lecturer in the Applied Psychology of Mental Health at Kent University (1988-96).

    Over the last fifteen years, Professor Carpenter has carried out research for the Department of Health and NHS on de-institutionalisation, community mental health services, violent mentally disordered offenders and assertive outreach teams. He has also researched for the Department of Health and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation the lives of disabled children and young people and their experiences of social care and health services.   • Professor Eric Emerson, Lancaster University
    Author of scoping review on prevention in learning disability; Principal Investigator on SSCR-funded project
    Eric Emerson is Professor of Disability and Health Research at Lancaster University (UK) and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. In 2008 he received a Distinguished Career Award for his contribution to research by the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability (IASSID).

    Professor Emerson is currently responsible for liaison between IASSID and the World Health Organisation. Eric has been a member of several advisory groups to government and non-government organizations and has written several books and over 140 articles in academic and professional journals on issues related to the health and social inequalities faced by disabled children and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities.   • Professor Jon Glasby, University of Birmingham
    Jon Glasby is Professor of Health and Social Care at the University of Birmingham. Professor Glasby is a qualified social worker by background and Director of the University of Birmingham's Health Services Management Centre. Specialising in joint work between health and social care, he is involved in regular policy analysis and advice. Professor Glasby is the author of a series of leading textbooks on health and social services, and also sits on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Integrated Care and The Policy Press. He is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Birmingham Children's Hospital. From 2003-2009 he was Secretary of State's representative on the board of the UK Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE).

    Professor Glasby joined HSMC in 2001 and has previously worked as a freelance researcher/trainer and an independent investigation officer for a social services complaints unit. He has also been a regular contributor to practice-based publications such as Community Care and Health Service Journal. Further information.

  • Professor Jim Mansell, University of Kent
    Jim Mansell is Emeritus Professor of Learning Disability in the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent and Adjunct Professor in the School of Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University, Melbourne. He is Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist and an Academician of the Social Sciences.

    The Tizard Centre, which he founded and directed for many years, has a large programme of research, consultancy and teaching in intellectual disability and community care. He has been a consultant, teacher and adviser to govermental and non-governmental organisations in Britain, the USA, Australia and Europe. He is a Trustee of the charity United Response and has been a Commissioner for the Social Care Inspection, a member of HM Government's Learning Disability Task Force and of the Independent Inquiry into Access to Healthcare for People with Learning Disabilities.   • Professor Justine Schneider, University of Nottingham
    Professor Justice Schneider is Professor of Mental Health and Social Care in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Nottingham. Her current post is half-funded by the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust, a mental health and learning disability services provider. Before moving to Nottingham in 2004, she was a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Applied Social Sciences at the University of Durham and a Non-Executive Director, County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS Trust.

    Professor Schneider has undertaken research in a wide range of health and social care contexts. She is a social worker and social researcher with a focus on marginalized groups and social inclusion, and has conducted research using various methods in relation to: costs and carer burden in dementia; quality of life and the impact of occupation in residential homes; the impact on carers, staff and service users of mental health care reforms; and various aspects of disability in relation to employment and social inclusion.   • Dr Brian Taylor, University of Ulster
    Brian Taylor is Senior Lecturer within the Institution for Research in Social Science at the University of Ulster. In addition, he has twelve years experience as a practitioner and manager in social work, residential care, primary school teaching and youth work; fifteen years in professional training and organisation development in health and social services; and is a registered social worker in Ireland.
