No event in recent American history has arguably shaped the fate of the nation at home and abroad more than the Vietnam War, and overcoming its restrictive legacy has been a major aim of successive American presidents. This aim has been most recently and forcefully articulated by president George W Bush while waging a war in Iraq, an implication of which has been to bury the Vietnam 'syndrome' forever
Marilyn Young is professor of history, New York University, USA.
