The idea that philosophy plays an important role in the public life of a culture goes without saying in continental Europe, but not in Britain. This event reflects on this European exception in our time.Julian Baggini is a philosopher and writer.

A C Grayling is professor of philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London, and a supernumerary fellow of St Anne's College, Oxford. Kate Soper is professor of philosophy at the Institute for the Study of European Transformations, London Metropolitan University.
