LSESU China Development Society public lecture
Date: Wednesday 18 February 2009
Time: 2-3pm
Venue: D302, Clement House
Speaker: Prof. Gary D Rawnsley
In this lecture, Professor Rawnsley is going to examine the 2008 Beijing Olympics from the perspective of Chinese public diplomacy and soft power. It will assess how the Chinese have appropriated not only sports, but also economics and culture as instruments of national projection and will demonstrate that, despite the idealism of their founders, it has always been difficult to separate the modern Olympic Games from politics and political interests.
Professor Rawnsley is the Chair of Asian International Communications. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at the National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He is a member of the Peer Review College of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, an International Reader for the Australian Research Council, and sits on the Executive Board of the American Association of Chinese Studies. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Chinese Studies, and an editor of RoutledgeCurzon's book series on Media, Culture and Social Change in Asia.
