Following the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) landslide election victory in November 2015, Myanmar saw the formation of a hybrid government in March 2016 that is effectively led by State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Great expectations but also significant concerns accompanied this start into the latest phase of Myanmar’s political transition beyond absolute military rule.
This panel discussion will review the record to date of the NLD-led government, one year after it assumed power. To what extent has Daw Aung San Suu Kyi been able to make headway on major issues and key challenges the country has faced, such as political reforms, the peace process, the situation in Rakhine State, and the relationship with China?

David Brenner is Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Surrey. He obtained his PhD from LSE with a thesis titled ‘Insurgency as a Social Process: Authority and Armed Groups in Myanmar's Changing Borderlands‘.
Khin Mar Mar Kyi is Senior Researcher and the Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Gender Research Fellow at University of Oxford.
Marie Lall is Professor of Education and South Asian Studies at the UCL Institute of Education. Prof Lall is the author of Understanding Reform in Myanmar, People and Society in the Wake of Military Rule. She currently serves as UCL's Pro-Vice-Provost for South Asia including Myanmar.
