The Seligman Library

The Seligman Library provides a quiet space for anthropology students to study. Named after Charles Seligman who was lecturer in ethnology at the school from 1910, it houses a catalogued collection of books and essential article offprints. It also hosts research seminars, including the Friday seminar on anthropological theory and a series of student-run regional seminars.

The library is exclusively for the use of students and staff in the Anthropology Department. The library is used as a borrowing library at lunchtimes during term time, where you can borrow books as well as obtain access to articles, off-prints, as well as DVDs. It is staffed by undergraduate students, who will be happy to assist you. Please note that you are unable to borrow anything outside of the opening hours.

At other times the room is available as a study room and is open from early morning to late evening. Please note, however, that meetings and seminars sometimes take place in there - look out for a “please do not disturb” notice on the door.

New Books

We regularly review our collection of books to ensure we include new and interesting titles. Thanks to funding from the LSE Annual Fund| over the past year we have been able to purchase a number of new books. Selected new titles can be seen here|. All these books are available to borrow from the Seligman Library. We would encourage you to visit the Library where we have displayed a number of these titles in our New Arrivals Cabinet. Special thanks go to Joanna Bojczewska for collating this document.

Borrowing items

During opening hours all cabinets are left open to allow you to peruse and pick any off-print or book you require. You can then approach one of the library assistants who will be able to issue it/them to you. Although the staff are there to assist you, they are not there to retrieve books or off-prints simply as a matter of course. Please only ask them to do this if you are having trouble locating what you are looking for.
