For UK & EU students, the Department has a quota of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) 4-year scholarships. These can be awarded to students on direct entry to the MRes/PhD programme, or to students first taking an MSc before proceeding to the MRes/PhD programme. The ESRC award will cover fees for UK and EU students and a stipend of £14,000 p.a. for UK students.
The Department also has a number of scholarship packages for direct entry MRes/PhD students which it can deploy flexibly, either as full scholarships, or as partial scholarships e.g. to top up a fees-only ESRC award or a partial scholarship that the student has raised. Departmental scholarships of this nature are normally linked to teaching duties after year one and are awarded on the basis of academic merit. In order to be considered for scholarship funding, you should complete and return the LSE Research Studentship Scheme application form which will is made available on the Graduate Admissions' web tracking system |once an offer of admission is made.
As the Department is unable to offer funding to all students, applicants are strongly advised to seek support from other bodies. The School's Financial Support Office| webpage has information on sources of funds for prospective graduate students. You should refer to the Graduate Study| pages for details of fees and a guide to the cost of living in London.
After the first year of studies, there are teaching and research assistantships available in the Department.
