Richard Descoings, 1958-2012
LSE European Institute was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Richard Descoings, director of the LSE's sister institution in France, Sciences Po. The relationship between the EI and Sciences Po is a deep and wide-ranging one, including the very successful European Double Master's degree, for which students spend the first year in Paris and the second year in London.

For an appreciation of Richard Descoings' legacy, see the full obituary| by Anne Corbett and the comment| by Maurice Fraser in The Guardian.
Bob Hancké
We are delighted to announce that Dr Bob Hancke has been successful in his bid for a large grant under the HEIF5 programme.  This is to establish various forms of close collaboration between the European Institute and the ETUI/ETUC in Bruxelles initially for the next two academic years.  The focus of the joint activities will be key issues in the political economy of Europe.  This will further strengthen the profile and networks of our political economy group
