Contemporary Turkish Studies

The Chair in Contemporary Turkish Studies was announced in October 2005 by the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan at LSE. The Chair is based in the European Institute and is the first of its kind in Europe. Its focus on political economy and contemporary issues is unprecedented in this context. Moreover, no other European university has endowed chairs in the social sciences on both Greece and Turkey. The location of the Chair in the European Institute has itself special importance and gives clues about the intentions and activities of the Chair. The fact that it is an endowed chair by the contributions of Turkish donors emphasizes the cooperation behind the establishment of the Chair.

The Chair in Contemporary Turkish Studies will provide academic leadership in the area of contemporary Turkish studies with respect to research, teaching and related public activities, which will place Turkey in the wider context of Europe and the European Union. The Chair's activities will explore the past, present and possible future links between Turkey and Europe in all its aspects. As such it is of interest of the social scientists and students both in Turkey and in Europe.

This Chair or Professorship could not have been possible without the generous support of five Turkish donors. The donors are:
