Internships

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Hellenic Observatory welcomes applications from current students and recent graduates (pre-PhD) who are interested in working for a short period (normally between one and six months) as interns, servicing the activities of the Hellenic Observatory. Duties can include both administration and research activities, in agreement with the successful applicant and with direct consideration of his/her interests and competencies.

Interns have access to the LSE computer network (including an LSE email account) and the LSE library (BLPES|). These facilities provide access to an extensive range of bibliographical and reference resources as well as statistical data. Additionally, interns can attend any of LSE's public events| as well as any lectures for taught courses offered at LSE (normally, with permission by the course lecturer and without any accreditation).

The Hellenic Observatory will provide office space and a dedicated mentor for the duration of the internship and will also offer advice for accommodation (occasionally we may be able to help with securing accommodation in one of the LSE Halls of Residence|)

Finally, the work will give experience of working in a professional office environment, working to set tasks with a degree of independent responsibility, and contributing to the effectiveness of our upcoming public events programme.

Applicants interested in an internship at the Hellenic Observatory should send a recent copy of their CV together with a cover letter (maximum two pages A4) explaining their experience, skills and availability, along with their interest for, and expected contribution to, the post as well as the benefits they expect to derive from their stay at the Hellenic Observatory. Priority will be given to candidates with a background or an active interest in one of the research specialisations of the Hellenic Observatory (public policy, international relations, political economy, regional economics).

PREVIOUS INTERNS

Ms Virginia Nasika (Nov 2008-Jun 2009)
Virginia worked with the Hellenic Observatory from November 2008 until June 2009. She was involved in many aspects of the Hellenic Observatory's work and became a valuable member of the team. As well as assisting with the activities and general administration of the Observatory, Virginia also afforded a tremendous support in the Hellenic Observatory's very active public events programme and her help was invaluable in the organisation of the 2-day biennial PhD Symposium which took place at the LSE in June 2009. We thank Virginia for all her help and wish her every success in her continued studies.

Ms Marilena Manatou (summer 2009)
Marilena undertook a 2 month internship at the HO in July 2009 Marilena worked on the preparation and dissemination of the August 2009 newsletter, as well as with other day to day administrative duties of the Observatory. We thank Marilena for her help and wish her all the best in her continued studies.

Mr Angelos Gkanoutas-Leventis (summer 2008)
Angelos, while being a student in the LSE, undertook the three month Student Internship of the Hellenic Observatory during the Summer Term of 2008/09. For the duration of this Internship, he worked on creating a new contact database for the biennial PhD Symposium and updating the main HO contact database. He also assisted in the dissemination of our HO Discussion Paper Series 'GreeSE' and has provided valuable help with the HO Newsletter. Angelos holds an MSc in Politics and Governance of the European Union from the LSE and a BSc in Politics and Economics from Brunel University. He has now moved on with his academic studies, having started a PhD in International Political Economy at City University. His research interests are Greek and European Political Economy as well as the Political Economy of Energy in relation to the real economy and the financial markets.

Mr Giorgos Alexiou (2005/06)
In the Lent Term of 2005/06 we had the pleasure to welcome Mr Giorgos Alexiou, a 2nd-year student at the Department of Political Science of the University of Bielefeld, for a three-month internship at the Hellenic Observatory. Giorgos provided valuable help, assisting with office work and doing excellent bibliographical research on a project run by Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis on Bulgarian Regional Policy during Transition. Being a surprising lively and inquisitive character, Giorgos was able to attend at the same time a wide range of public lectures and course seminars at LSE and to work on his own research for his undergraduate dissertation, benefiting from the resources available at the BLPES. We thank Giorgos for his valuable support and good spirits and we wish him all the best in his studies at Bielefeld - hoping to see him again in the near future, perhaps as a graduate student at the LSE!

Mr Konstantinos Papadimitriou (2006/07)
Konstantinos was a 2nd year student at the Department of Politics & International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London, studying towards a BA in Politics and International Relations. He joined the Hellenic Observatory for a month in the spring of 2007 and provided valuable help with the setting-up of the 5th issue of our Newsletter as well as with other administrative duties. We thank Konstantinos for his support and wish him all the best in his studies and future endeavours. We hope his experience at the Hellenic Observatory was for him as productive and enjoyable as it was for us.
