Only UK students who have recognised research training MA/MSc degrees can apply for ESRC| funding to support their MPhil/PhD. The Gender Institute has 1+3 ESRC recognition for its PhD programme. Applicants who wish to be considered for this should look at the ESRC| web site. As the new ESRC regulations mean we can only put forward one candidate only from each 1+3 and +3 categories, each year we have an internal deadline in February, when we make our decision who to put forward and you must have an offer from us in hand by then. Please note that there is no guarantee you will receive an award even if you are recommended by the Institute.
Students whose research topic falls more within the remit of the Arts and Humanities Research Council are eligible to apply for funding by the AHRC|. Students had to have an offer in hand to be considered for AHRC grants by the January deadline, so that avenue is now closed for 2010/11. Likewise, the LSE PhD Scholarship| deadline had the same deadline so has now closed.
Please consult the pages of the Financial Support Office| for other sources of funding for UK /EU students & overseas students. The FSO deal with all funding at LSE so are the best people to talk to.
The Institute also has a small research fund| which it draws on to offer financial assistance to students. Allocation is by merit and current and incoming research students are automatically sent the appropriate forms by the financial support office in April/May for submission in June. All candidates will be informed personally of the outcome by the financial support office in July. Note, however, that the normal allocation from this fund is modest, and usually a contribution toward fees.
