It is a paradox indeed that cities both embody the crowning achievements of human creativity and development, and have also been the site of many of the worst aspects of twentieth century life. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, then, cities are both the source of major social problems, as well as the crucibles of dynamic innovations and change. Cities are also places of diverse cultural interactions - and any attempts to harness their economic potential and dynamism will need to recognise and build upon this cultural diversity. This programme will equip students with the skills to participate constructively in shaping urban futures in a way that is sensitive both to economic needs and to social and cultural difference.
