Dr Simona Iammarino|

LSE academics work with OECD on policy making after disasters|

Professor Simona Iammarino| and Professor Andrés Rodríguez-Pose| have produced research central to a new report by the OECD|. The study, ‘Policy Making after Disasters: Helping Regions Become Resilient|’ has already assisted the Government of Italy in their strategic planning following the 2009 Abruzzo earthquake. The recommendations of the report can guide regions in all countries to more resilient growth, help them monitor good practices and improve the well-being of local communities after natural disasters.

New academic link with University of Gothenburg|

Professor Sylvia Chant| has been appointed as Adlerbertska Guest Professor in Sustainable Development at the University of Gothenburg|, Sweden, 2013-2015.  The position will involve yearly visits to Gothenburg to engage in research presentations and exchange with staff and postgraduates specialising in Development Geography.

ESRC report seeks an end to economic downturn|

The Re-igniting Growth report examines some of the challenges the UK faces after the economic downturn and explores a range of initiatives or changes to policy that could help kickstart growth. Many of the ideas in the report are being taken forward by the LSE Growth Commission|.

Legalised prostitution increases human trafficking|

Countries where prostitution is legal experience larger reported inflows of human trafficking, according to new research by Prof. Eric Neumayer|.

Research on human trafficking is growing as the seriousness of the problem becomes more apparent. It is thought to be second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable illegal industry. Read more|.

Dr Hyun Bang Shin| will instruct a new course on 'Urban Asia: Cities, Society and Development|' at the annual LSE-PKU Summer School. The course explores the contemporary dynamics of urbanisation in Asia, with special emphasis rapid urban development with strong state intervention.

The LSE-PKU Summer School| takes place in Beijing every year.
