What do students do if they don't get on with their tutor or supervisor?

If the relationship between the undergraduate student and their tutor does not flourish, they should see the Departmental Tutor who should arrange for a change of tutor. If the Departmental Tutor is also the tutor, the Convenor will make the arrangements.

If an MSc student wishes to change their tutor, they should see the MSc Convenor in the first instance and then the MSc Programme Manager if the matter is unresolved.

If research students wish to change their supervisor, they need to speak to the Research Student Tutor initially. If the matter is unresolved they should see the Convenor. If it is still unresolved they need to speak to the Postgraduate Dean.

How do students make complaints?

There are a number of means and channels of consultation and representation provided by the School, the Graduate School or the Undergraduate School and the Department. The Department's own arrangements involve the holding of student feedback meetings twice in each academic session for the undergraduate, MSc and research programmes. All students are notified in advance of the dates, times and venues of these meetings by email. In addition, Student Representatives for each programme are elected to provide a regular channel of representation of students' views and interests.

The procedures for submission of grievance by students on academic matters are given in the School's Student Handbooks under Disciplinary and Other Regulations and Procedures. The codes state that the normal expectation is that students who are not satisfied with any aspect of the School's teaching, tutorial or supervisory provision or with other academic or related administrative matters, will initially seek remedial action at the time informally through their Tutor, Departmental Tutor, Departmental Convenor of Dean of Undergraduate Studies (undergraduates), or through their Supervisor, Research Student Tutor, Departmental Convenor or Dean of the Graduate School (graduates) as appropriate.

What facilities does the Department of Government provide for its research students?

There are separate Common Rooms for our Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students. The Department's research students have IT facilities within the Department. In addition to IT facilities available in the rest of the School (including the Library), the Department's computing and printing machines for research student use are housed in each of the research student research rooms:

  • CON 3.03
  • CON 4.19
  • CON 5.03
  • CON 5.21

All PCs in the School are IBM and word-processing is standardised to Windows XP, with a variety of software packages, notably Office 2003, including Word and Excel. There are also several Database packages available, including SPSS and Access. Machines are fully networked with access to the Library's Unicorn catalogue system and the Internet. All LSE students are provided with e-mail accounts.
