BSc Politics and Philosophy

In 2009 the Government Department in partnership with the Philosophy Department will launch a new B.Sc. in Politics and Philosophy. This exciting new degree complements the other joint programmes offered by the Government Department such as Government and Economics and enables the Department to satisfy growing student demand and interest in philosophy, politics and economics programmes. The Government Department has one of the strongest political theory groups in the world, with scholars who lead in their respective fields. This teaching and research presence is strengthened by collaboration with the Philosophy Department which also contains world class political philosophers and one of the world's leading programmes in Philosophy and Public Policy. The LSE has always been committed to the central importance of political philosophy and theory to the study and practice of the social sciences and it is the right time to re-emphasise that in this new undergraduate degree.

The degree combines courses from the fields of government (politics) and philosophy in roughly equal measure and allows students to specialise in the wide range of political theory and philosophy options available in both departments. However, the unique selling point of the degree is not merely the range of choice in political theory and philosophy but the way in which the structure of the degree connects the core elements of both subjects with an understanding of political practices and behaviour, and development of political ideals and values. In their third year, students will take a course Philosophy and Public Policy, which examines specific policy questions from conceptual and normative perspectives.

This programme will be of special interest to students looking for PPE programmes and will be a valuable preparation for careers media and journalism, political consultancy, civil service and local government, law and business.

This joint honours degree combines courses from the fields of government (politics) and philosophy in approximately equal weighting. However, you will have a considerable amount of choice in how you balance your study and in the specific courses taken within each of the two fields.

Students will not just do the core elements of politics and philosophy 'side-by-side': the aim is to show how the study of each is relevant for understanding political practices and behaviour, and for the understanding and development of political ideals. To this purpose, in their third year, students will take a course Philosophy and Public Policy, which examines specific policy questions from conceptual and normative perspectives.
