EPRG MEP Survey Data

This page presents the data from three surveys of the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) by EPRG (in 2000, 2006, and 2010), as well as data from a survey of the MEPs in the 1989-94 Parliament by Shaun Bowler and David Farrell.

The data from these surveys are available here for academic research purposes only. Access to the datasets and the related files is password-protected.  If you would like to access the files please send an e-mail to Simon Hix (s.hix@lse.ac.uk|) with a brief explanation of how you intend to use the data.  These data can only be used for academic research purposes.

Data from the 2000, 2006, and 2010 MEP Surveys by EPRG

David Farrell, Simon Hix and Roger Scully have conducted three surveys of the MEPs:
- in 2000 (of the 1999-2004 parliament),
- in 2006 (of the 2004-2009 parliament), and
- in 2010 (of the 2009-2014 parliament).
Each survey was conducted in all the official languages of the EU.  The 2000 survey was conducted via a paper-based questionnaire, while the 2006 and 2010 surveys were conducted as on-line surveys.

The 2010 survey included seven categories of questions:

1. Background and Career
2. Getting Elected to the European Parliament
3. 2009 Electoral Campaign
4. Representation and Contacts
5. Legislative Behaviour
6. General Political Attitudes
7. Views on EU Politics

The research for the 2010 survey was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council of the United Kingdom,  The survey was conducted for EPRG by Ipsos-MORI in London, which is an independent polling agency with extensive experience of web-based surveys.  Ipsos-MORI designed the website , and we translated the questionnaire into all the official languages of the EU.  The e-mail inviting the MEPs to complete the survey (which we sent out in the language of each MEP) included a message from the President of the European Parliament (Jerzy Buzek) encouraging the MEP to complete the survey. We sent three follow-up e-mails.

Information about the response rate and the sample of the 2010 survey compared to the 2000 and 2006 surveys can be found in one of the spreadsheets in the Excel "integrated datafile" (see below).

We have also written a research paper which analyses the main determinants of MEPs' attitudes on EU policies, as expressed in the 2010 survey, such as their personal left-right and pro-/anti-EU positions, their political party affiliations, and their member state affiliations:

Data from Bowler-Farrell Survey of the 1989-94 EP

In addition to the recent EPRG surveys, here are the dataset from the survey of the MEPs in the 1989-94 EP by Shaun Bowler and David Farrell.  We have not been able to find a codebook for the data, but the definitions and coding are self-explanatory for most of the variables:
