About the MPA/MSc programmes
Under this innovative plan, students can apply for a package of two master's programmes offered by Columbia University and LSE, providing a comprehensive education in earth sciences and environmental policy. Successful applicants will first take the Columbia University MPA in Environmental Science and Policy. Following an internship in the USA or UK, they will then progress to either the MSc Environmental Policy and Regulation| or the MSc Environment and Development| at LSE.
Combining the two master's programmes in this way provides the student with a thorough grounding both in the earth sciences and the range of the social sciences concerning environmental policy issues. While the Columbia MPA concentrates to a greater extent on the USA context, the LSE MSc offers the opportunity for a more global perspective, including an emphasis on sustainable development. The combination also offers a variety of teaching styles, from hands-on science to a self directed integrative dissertation at the end of the LSE programme; from case study based policy analysis to multi-disciplinary theoretical engagement with environmental topics.
The entire joint package runs from June each year and takes 27 months (12 months on the MPA; 3 months internship; 12 months on the MSc). Applicants apply to Columbia University in the first instance. During the second semester on the MPA, students will be asked to activate the option to study at LSE and will enter a simplified admissions process, leading to an offer to study on the chosen MSc, conditional on successfully completing the MPA. Students will pay the fees current at each of their host institutions.
