Reconnect with Research

English language and research classes for refugee and asylum seeking scholars
6 November – 11 December 2012 and 15 January - 19 February 2013

The deadline for applications has now passed and no further applications can be accepted.

Reconnect with Research is an English language course with an academic focus for displaced scholars. The programme will equip academics with the language skills appropriate for pursuing research work and furthering their academic interests. It includes academic writing, analytical and discursive skills and explores current research to promote research-centred language learning.

The course is for UK-based refugee or asylum-seeking scholars who would benefit from enhanced English language support and introduction to the UK Higher Education system. It will provide access to LSE expertise and resources and, we hope, assist persecuted scholars in returning to academia.

The programme will be held by way of a two-hour class on twelve Tuesday evenings. The course will be held at LSE in central London. Guest speakers will contribute short addresses, each linked to a research task, which we will support with relevant language study.

The class size is strictly limited to ensure maximum participation and support for all.

Course Components

The course will:

  • Study academic writing, analysis and discursive skills
  • Explore relevant current research and use this to reconnect with research topics
  • Focus on reading research material with a view to incorporating conventions and practice into writing style
  • Look at targeting journals and adapt writing styles to specific journal requirements
