Bronwen Manby is senior programme adviser for the Africa Governance Monitoring and Advocacy Project (AfriMAP), an initiative of the Open Society Foundations in Africa established to monitor and strengthen compliance with the African Union's commitments on good governance and human rights. Working with local communities in more than 70 countries, the Open Society Foundations support justice and human rights, freedom of expression, and access to public health and education.
Bronwen Manby was previously the deputy director of the Africa division of Human Rights Watch, and has also worked for human rights organizations in South Africa. She has written on a wide range of human rights issues in Africa, especially focusing on South Africa and Nigeria, and on continental developments in human rights law. She is the author of two books on African nationality law released in 2009: Struggles for Citizenship in Africa, published by Zed Books, and Citizenship Law in Africa: A Comparative Study, published by the Open Society Foundations.
During her visit to the Centre in 2003, Bronwen gave a seminar on the subject of Human Rights in Africa|, which was attended by over 80 staff, students and external participants. Tapes of the seminar were distributed widely to, amongst others, academic researchers in Africa.
During her visit in 2011/12 Bronwen conducted further research and writing on citizenship and the right to a nationality.
During both of her fellowships Bronwen led a master-class for MSc Human Rights students over a series of week. The classes offered a hands-on overview of research and advocacy at an international human rights organisation and were highly valued by students seeking to develop their practical skills.
