Research and Publications
Dr Casey is a specialist in U.S. foreign policy during the twentieth century. His first book was Cautious Crusade: Franklin D. Roosevelt, American Public Opinion, and the War against Nazi Germany, 1941-1945 (Oxford University Press, 2001; paperback 2004), which explored American attitudes toward Nazi Germany during World War II. His most recent book, Selling the Korean War: Propaganda, Politics, and Public Opinion, 1950-1953 (Oxford University Press, 2008; paperback 2010), won both the 2010 Truman Book Award and the 2009 Neustadt Prize for best book in American Politics. Dr Casey is currently completing When Soldiers Fall: How Americans have Debated Combat Casualties, from World War I to the War on Terror, which will also be published by Oxford University Press.
Dr Casey has recently edited a special issue of the Journal of Strategic Studies on the sixtieth anniversary of the Korean War, which will be republished as The Korean War at Sixty by Routledge in 2012. He is also the co-editor of Mental Maps in the Era of Two World Wars (Palgrave, 2008) and Mental Maps in the Early Cold War Era (Palgrave 2011). His next book projects explores the U.S. military-media relationship during World War II.
Dr Casey has published a number of scholarly articles, including 'Casualty Reporting and Domestic Support for War: The U.S. Experience during the Korean War,' Journal of Strategic Studies, volume 33 (2010); 'Wilfred Burchett and the UN Command's Media Relations during the Korean War,' Journal of Military History, volume 74, (2010); 'White House Publicity Operations during the Korean War,' Presidential Studies Quarterly, volume 35 (December 2005); 'Selling NSC-68: The Truman Administration and the Politics of Mobilization, 1950-51,' Diplomatic History, volume 29 (September 2005); 'The Campaign to Sell a Harsh Peace for Germany to the American Public, 1944-48,' History, volume 90 (January 2005); and Franklin Roosevelt, Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstaengl and the "S-Project," 1942-44,' Journal of Contemporary History, volume 35 (2000).
Dr Casey studied for his undergraduate degree at the University of East Anglia before moving to Oxford where he completed an MPhil and then D. Phil in International Relations. Between 1998 and 2001, he was a Junior Research Fellow and subsequently Tutor in Politics at Trinity College, Oxford. He joined the LSE in 2001.
In 2004-5 Dr Casey was the recipient of the Truman Scholar's Award. In 2006 he was awarded a Marshall/Baruch Fellowship. In 2008 he was one of the inaugural Visiting Fellows at the Australian Prime Ministers Centre in Canberra, as well as the Visiting Scholar at the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library in Perth, where he presented the annual Curtin Public Lecture entitled, 'A Missed Opportunity: The Curtin-Roosevelt Meeting and Australian-American Relations during World War II.' In 2009 he received a Mathew Ridgway Grant to research at the U.S. Military History Institute in Carlisle Pennsylvania. In 2010 he was awarded a British Academy Small Research Grant and in 2011 a Moody Grant from the Lyndon Johnson Library.
