Professor Mia Rodriguez-Salgado, Professor of History

Research and Publications

Professor Rodríguez-Salgado's main fields of interest lie in sixteenth century history, with particular interest in international relations, including Anglo-Spanish relations and the foreign policy of Philip II, Charles V and Elizabeth Tudor. She has also researched and published on the history of the court and the history of patriotism and nationalism. Publications include The Changing Face of Empire: Charles V, Philip II and Habsburg Authority 1551-1559 (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge etc., 1988); Armada. The Official Catalogue of the National Maritime Museum Exhibition (with contributions from the staff of the National Maritime Museum; Penguin Books, 1988); Edited with Dr. Simon Adams, England, Spain and the Grand Armada, 1585-1604. Essays from the Anglo-Spanish Conferences, London and Madrid 1988 (John Donald, Edinburgh, 1991); Felipe II. El "Paladín de la Cristiandad" y la Paz con el Turco. (Colección "Síntesis" XI. Professor Rodríguez-Salgado is currently completing two books: Monarch of the World. Charles V and International Relations in the Sixteenth Century (Yale University Press) and The Greatest Monarch in Christendom. Philip II and his World in the 1560s (Cambridge University Press). Professor Rodríguez-Salgado is a Professor in International History. She gained her BA from Durham and her PhD from Hull She worked as a Lecturer at the University of St. Andrews and then became a Lecturer at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She joined the LSE as a Lecturer in 1985, and became a Professor in 1996. She is currently an editor of the Cambridge University Press series New Studies in European History and on the panel of the journal Civilità Mantovana, and frequently acts as commentator and advisor on TV and Radio programmes.

Teaching and Supervision

Professor Rodríguez-Salgado's teaching at the LSE reflects the research interests outlined above. She is on sabbatical in 2011-12, but normally teaches the following courses:

At undergraduate level:
