Research and Publications
Professor Stevenson's main fields of interests lie in international relations in Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; origins, course, and impact of the First World War. His publications include 1914-1918: the History of the First World War (Penguin Press, 2004) also published by Basic Books (New York) as Cataclysm: the First World War as Political Tragedy; and by Rizzoli (Milan) as La Grande Guerra: una Storia Globale. Professor Stevenson studied for his undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, where he is also studied for his PhD. He joined the LSE as a Lecturer in 1982 and became a Professor in 1998.
Professor Stevenson gave the keynote lectures at international conferences on the ninetieth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, University of Kent at Canterbury, July 2006, and on 'Strategic Planning and the Origins of the First World War', Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario, March 2007. He has been invited to give a keynote lecture at the annual conference of the British International History Group, Oxford, September 2010. Previous participation in conferences have included International Studies Association annual convention, Montreal, March 2004; Conference on the entente cordiale and Anglo-French relations, Salford University, March 2004; Conference on the history of the First World War, Berlin, May 2004; Conference on 'An Avoidable War?' (1914), Emory University, Atlanta, October 2004; Lecture at symposium, 'Storia e memoria', Rome, October.
Professor Stevenson's next book, With Our Backs to the Wall: Victory and Defeat in 1918, will be published in 2011 by Penguin Books and by Harvard University Press.
He is the recipient a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2004-5) for research on supply and logistics in 1914-1918.
