Academic Links with China

LSE has joined forces with a number of universities in China to offer a variety of collaborative teaching and research activities comprising Double Degree Programmes, joint research projects, PhD exchanges, teaching and training programmes, as well as conferences and workshops.

Peking University (PKU)|

LSE-PKU Double Master Degree in International Affairs

This double degree programme was launched in 2005 with the first cohort starting their studies in September 2006. It offers an outstanding opportunity for graduate students and young professionals to gain a degree from both universities in a period of two years.
The first year is spent at the School of International Studies at Peking University, studying the international relations of China and the Asia Pacific region. The second year is spent at the LSE, studying the theory and history of global international relations.

LSE-PKU Double Master Degree in Government and Public Administration

The first cohort of students began their studies on this programme in September 2011. The first year of the programme is spent in Beijing studying Chinese politics and various aspects of policy-making in China. The second year, in London, focuses on public policy, public administration, public management and comparative public policy. Further Details|

LSE-Peking University Summer School

The LSE-PKU Summer School started in 2004, with 61 students from 15 countries. In 2011 the programme had over 375 students from 50 countries, with the single largest number of students from China. The programme is modelled on the very successful summer school programme at LSE, with specific China and Asia related courses on the Beijing programme.

Executive Public Policy Training Programme (EPPTP)

The EPPTP was launched in 2006, as a partnership between LSE, Peking University, Columbia University, and Sciences Po, Paris. The programme is specifically developed for senior Chinese government officials, to develop their understanding and skill-set in public policy and policy making.

Each year around 50 officials from around China participate in the programme in Beijing, taught by academics from the four institutions. Further Details|.

PhD Exchanges with PKU

Since 2011 Peking University has participated in LSE's PhD mobility network, allowing for an exchange of PhD students between the 2 institutions. LSE students can apply for a bursary to cover some of their costs during a 2-3 months period of  PhD study at PKU. Further details.|

October 2008 - PhD Workshop

From 22-26 October 2008 PKU also hosted the collaborative GPPN research conference with the theme of "Public governance of markets: European and Asian experiences" which was funded by GPPN's 2008 China Grant programme. A select number of PhD students from LSE, Sciences Po, Paris and PKU presented their papers and discussed the development of public policy together with academics from the three institutions including Prof Mark Thatcher| from LSE

October 2008 - GPPN Conference at Peking University, School of Government

The 3rd Global Public Policy Network (GPPN|) Conference with the theme of "Harmonising Globalisation: Seeking Solutions to Common Problems" was held in Beijing on 20-21 October 2008 which brought together around 300 prominent policy academics, practitioners and students from around the world. It was hosted by the Peking University School of Government in collaboration with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. For further information including press cuttings, please click here|.

BIONET (2006-2009)

LSE BIOS| (Centre for the Study of Bioscience, Biomedicine, Biotechnology and Society), with a series of European and Chinese partners, including Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, and the Beijing Genomics Institute were awarded funding for the EU's BIONET project in 2006. This major initiative in Chinese-European co-operation focuses on ethical governance of biological and biomedical research in China and Europe.

Visiting Professor at PKU School of Government from Global Public Policy Network (GPPN)

Sciences Po professor, Richard Balme, held a 2 year visiting professorship at Peking University's School of Government, with a core teaching responsibility on PKU degree programmes in globalisation and public policy.

Global Public Policy Dialogues, China (GPPN Project)

This set of public lectures and seminars involved leading academics from the GPPN institutions, as well as high-profile international and Chinese figures in public policy and business. Four lectures were organized over the year. Sponsorship was provided by EDF, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ile de France.

LSE International History

The LSE Cold War Studies Centre hosted a workshop, in London, on international history and international relations with the PKU School of International Studies. The workshop was held on 5-6 May 2006. For further details click here|.

From 2004 to 2006 LSE and Peking University held a series of public lectures

June 2004 - Inaugural Lecture, Howard Davies, LSE Director - Globalisation and Financial Reform, hosted by the China Centre for Economic Research (CCER), Peking University.

January 2005 - Professor Justin Lin, Director of the China Centre of Economic Research, PKU - Is China's Economic Development Sustainable?, hosted by LSE.

April 2005 - Prof. Henrietta Moore, LSE Deputy Director, Modernity, hosted by Peking University.

October 2005 - Prof. Charles Goodhart, Financial Markets Group, LSE - The Future of Central Banking, hosted by the China Centre for Economic Research, Peking University.

May 2006 - Prof. Wang Jisi, Dean of the School of International Studies, PKU, "Peaceful Rise": A Discourse in China, hosted by the Cold War Studies Centre (CWSC), LSE.

September 2006 - Prof. Tim Murphy, LSE Deputy Director - Law and the Social Sciences, hosted by the School of Law, Peking University.

Fudan University|

LSE-Fudan Double Master Degree in Global Media and Communications

The LSE-Fudan Double Masters in Global Media and Communications is a two year programme, which commenced in 2007-08. The first year of the programme is based at LSE's Department of Media and Communications, and the second year at Fudan University's School of Journalism.

Students who successfully complete the programme graduate with two master's degrees, one from each university. Students on the double degree programme also have the opportunity to study Chinese in London in their first year. During the second year at Fudan all academic courses are taught in English, and there are further courses on Chinese language and civilisation.Further Details.|

Past Events

LSE-Fudan Joint Workshop on Civil Society

The workshop took place in Shanghai in June 2010. The workshop was organised by LSE's Centre for Civil Society and the School of Social Development and Public Policy at Fudan University. Academics from the UK and China discussed the evolution of civil society in China, in a comparative context, with a focus on NGO development. The conference also included field visits to community organisations in Shanghai.

LSE-Fudan University - Joint Social Policy Conference - 21 & 22 April 2005

The Conference was organized by the School of Social Development and Public Policy at Fudan University.  From the LSE 10 academics from the departments of government, social policy, law, economics, and social anthropology attended.  For further details on the speakers click here|.

The workshop series was held in Shanghai, London and Paris, with academics from the respective institutions' international relations departments.
