Applications for LSE GROUPS 2012 have now closed. But check back soon to read more about this year's projects and look out for LSE GROUPS 2013 application information next Lent Term.
What is LSE GROUPS?
LSE GROUPS is a fantastic opportunity for undergraduates to take part in an original research project. Students work in small groups of mixed disciplines and mixed years, with a research supervisor, for two weeks (usually Weeks 9 and 10 of Summer Term) and present their project at a research conference on the final day.
LSE GROUPS students attend the British Conference of Undergraduate Research
Four LSE students attended the British Conference of Undergraduate Research at the University of Warwick last month and presented the winning papers from 2011’s LSE GROUPS project, run by the Teaching and Learning Centre. "We were asked many interesting questions about our presentation [on the impact of the Olympic-related housing programme on the sustainability of the local community in east London]," reported Malika Bouazzaoui (International Relations), "and it was great to learn about recent discoveries and be able to contribute to others' research." Her co-presenter Jiazhe Zhu (Economics) said, "There were presentations from many different disciplines … I was especially impressed by a PhD student at the conference who talked about his own experience of undergraduate research – that was very rewarding." The "Olympics" team at LSE GROUPS also included Aditi Gupta (International History), Alisa Popova (Management), Naxin Wangy (Social Policy) and Sam Williams (Government).
The other group's paper, written by Michelle Kalu (Economics), Monica Kaminska (International Relations), Alyssa Nam (Economics), Andrew Nicolau (Statistics), Stavros Stavrikkos (Geography and Environment) and Tam Trinh (Economics) centred on the role of information, education and incentive in the successful implementation of environmental policies across London universities. BCUR attendee Tam Trinh said: "The audience expressed great interest in the topic as well as the way it was presented." Fellow presenter Stavros Stavrikkos added: "We felt a bit original as most of the people there were on their own, presenting their dissertations … It was a great experience, and it really widened our knowledge about undergraduate research in the UK."
LSE GROUPS is just one of the Maximise Your Potential| opportunities available to undergraduates this summer.
