LSE's Teaching and Learning Centre administers funding for a wide range of teaching and learning development activity.
Teaching and Learning Development Fund
This is our core fund, with a total of £36,000 available to support projects aimed at developing innovation in curriculum design, teaching, learning and assessment, as well as new approaches to student orientation and student skills enhancement. See the Teaching and Learning Development Fund: past projects| page for examples of projects funded in recent years and the Teaching and Learning Development Fund: FAQs| page for information about making an application.
Pre-Major Review Grants
This fund offers six grants of up to £500 specifically to support staff pre-major review. Please see the Pre-Major Review Grants application guidance| (Word) and the Pre-Major Review Grants application form| (Word).
External Programmes Fee Support
This fund offers one-off funding to contribute in part or fully towards the cost of external training related to teaching and learning. Please see the External Programmes Fee Support: FAQs| page.
Departmental Training and Development Fund
The Teaching Task Force allocated £20,000 per year for departmental training and/or development events on teaching and learning issues, and recommended that each department commit to at least one such event per year. Funding could be used to cover, for instance, the costs of an external venue, facilitation or other expert support, catering and other necessary resources. An Academic Departmental Away Days application form| (Word) should be completed in the first instance. If you want to discuss ideas for other departmental training and/or development please contact the Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre, Liz Barnett (l.barnett@lse.ac.uk|).
Heads of Departments Fund
We also have funding aimed primarily at supporting Heads of Departments. This could cover a wide variety of activity: funding external management training or access to an experienced coach, succession planning (training for a member of department likely to be taking on a Head of Department role), or the planning and implementation of departmental events relating to teaching or research strategy. To discuss ideas, Heads of Departments should contact Liz Barnett (l.barnett@lse.ac.uk|) in the first instance.
Please note that we do not fund academic conferences or projects that are primarily about the use of new technology in teaching. For the latter, please contact Steve Ryan in the Centre for Learning Technology (s.ryan@lse.ac.uk|).
