Laptop surgery

Who we are

We provide free advice and hands-on assistance connecting to LSE resources from off-site and connecting personally-owned laptop and mobile devices to the LSE network.

What we do

  • Laptop SurgeryConnection of personally-owned laptops to LSE's IT environment: the LSE network, email & public folders, H: space and School printers
  • Virus and 'malware' protection, disinfection or removal
  • Academic data retrieval
  • Advice on Operating System problems
  • Help diagnosing hardware problems
  • Configuration of mobile phones and PDAs to access LSE email
  • General advice on laptop and mobile devices issues
  • Limited hardware support:
    • hard drive data recovery
    • hard drive replacements
    • memory upgrades

Important information

You are required to stay with your laptop at all times during your visit to the Laptop Surgery.
You are advised to bring your power supply, adapters and software CD's.

The Laptop Surgery is unable to assist with:

  • Hardware repairs of any kind
  • Staff and students from other universities
  • LSE alumni

Advice for Students

Expected Waiting Time
The Laptop Surgery runs on a drop-in basis. Waiting times may be lengthy at the beginning of each term. For example, the Laptop Surgery had over 60 visitors a day during Michaelmas Term 2006.

To Save Time
Much of the time is spent scanning for viruses and spyware, and updating software and the operating system.

Advice for Staff

Personally Owned Laptops|
Staff and research students with personally-owned laptops are welcome to attend the Laptop Surgery drop-in service during term and in vacation (Please note the student advice above).

For advice and assistance with connection to LSE resources, staff can request appointments for the hour after the laptop surgery closes during term time only by emailing: ITS.Remote.Support@lse.ac.uk|.

LSE Owned Laptops
Staff and research students with LSE-owned laptops are supported by their IT Support teams|.
