Queen hears why 'no one foresaw financial crisis'
A lack of imagination by "financial wizards" was responsible for the failure to predict the financial crisis, according to economists who sent the Queen a letter. The three-page document, signed by Tim Besley, a professor at the LSE and a member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee, and Prof Peter Hennessy, a political historian, was sent after the Queen asked on a visit to the LSE why no one had predicted the credit crunch.

Women are getting more beautiful
Scientists have found that evolution is driving women to become ever more beautiful, while men remain as aesthetically unappealing as their caveman ancestors. This builds on previous work by Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the LSE, who found that good-looking parents were far more likely to conceive daughters.

Plan for tuition fees to hit £7,000 a year
Students face tuition fees of £7,000 a year by 2013 under plans being developed by both Labour and the Conservatives. Both parties are studying an overhaul of the system under which top universities would be allowed to lift fees above the current legal limit of £3,225, while many former polytechnics would offer no-frills degrees for free. They will be submitted to a review by Nicholas Barr of the LSE, intellectual father of tuition fees.
