News

Members of the Spectrum committee have been working with the School's Equality & Diversity Adviser and with HR, to foreground LGBT issues as part of the School's Single Equalities Scheme. This work has included:

1. Contributing information and ideas to the Equality & Diversity Learning and Development Group;
2. Helping to commission online Equality & Diversity training which will be rolled out to all staff at the LSE;
3. Representing the LSE at the Russell Group LGBT Council, which discusses national strategies for LGBT equality, and;
4. Spectrum was also represented at the new academic staff induction.

2012 - The year ahead

The School's take on Equality & Diversity this year will foreground multiple identities, that is to say the experience of people whose identity includes more than one of the 'protected characteristics' under the Equality Act. In our cultural/educational events, we plan to examine themes of multiple identities, especially in relation to international LGBT human rights.

The main aims of Spectrum fall under the following areas:

1. Lobbying and representation
   To act as the officially recognised staff representative group  for all issues relating to LGBT equality vis-à-vis School policy and any formal consultations which the School may undertake.
2. Culture and education
   To organise in-School cultural and educational activities that focus on LGBT issues, in particular in areas where the School has academic expertise, so as to promote greater awareness of debate on LGBT issues and the School's contribution to these areas.  These would be open to all LSE staff.
3. Social networking and support
   To provide a social support network for LGBT staff at the School, to encourage staff to feel open and confident about their identity, and to demonstrate the School's commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity in the workplace.

London Friend| is a charity that has been serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community since 1972.

London Friend exists to promote the social, emotional, physical and sexual health and well-being of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, including transgender people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual and all those unsure of their sexuality.
They offer counselling and support services which set out to explore issues of same-sex relationships, sexual identity and promote personal growth and self-confidence. They also provide social groups, and a safe space as an alternative place to meet and socialise.

All their services are delivered by trained lesbian, gay and bisexual volunteers. The services they provide include:

• LGBT groups and workshops
• One-to-one counselling
• General LGBT helpline – 020 7837 3337 (7.30–9.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday)
• LGBT bereavement helpline – 020 7837 3337 (7.30–9.30pm every Tuesday)
• E-mail support service (E-Talk)
• Telephone befriending service (new service from Health at Friend)
• Support group for carers (new service from Health at Friend)
• Homophobic and transphobic crime reporting
• A library on LGBT issues
• Free information on HIV/AIDS and other sexually-transmitted infections
• Free condoms and lube
