Programme transfer

Students wanting to transfer degree programmes must complete the Request to Transfer Programme| form (also available in Word|), providing an explanation of why you wish to change programme, obtain the necessary approval as indicated on the form, and submit the form to Student Services|. Forms are available on this web page and from Student Services|.

Details about the process of applying to transfer programmes are outlined below by undergraduate|, graduate| and General Course|.

Undergraduate

Undergraduate students can request to change their programme of study at any time during their studies, but changes of programme are made at the School's discretion. Permission will depend on a number of factors, which include:

  • the number of students already registered for a particular degree;
  • your own qualifications;
  • the admission quota for each degree; and
  • whether the courses that you are taking (or have already taken) fit into the regulations of the degree to which you wish to transfer.

After you have completed the Request to Transfer Programme| form (also available in Word|), it should also be completed and signed by both the departmental tutor of the degree programme you are leaving and the departmental tutor of the programme you hope to join.

The application will be passed to the Undergraduate Studies Subcommittee (USSC) for consideration. Until formal approval is given, you will remain registered on your current programme and will be expected to comply with all its requirements, including attendance at all classes.

After the form returns from the USSC we will inform you of the final decision and, if your application is successful, we will process your degree transfer. You will receive an email notification within 5 working days from that date (except during the main registration period in September/October when it may take longer). Once a transfer is approved, for details about changing courses, please see the Course Change| pages.

Graduate

Postgraduate students can normally request to change their programme of study only during the first three weeks of the Michaelmas term. Any changes outside of this period will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances.

After you have completed the Request to Transfer Programme| form (also available in Word|), it should be completed and signed by the programme director of the programme you are leaving and the programme director of the programme you wish to join.

If your application is successful, you will receive an email confirmation of your transfer within 5 working days (except during the main registration period in September/October, when it may take longer). Once a transfer is approved, for details about changing courses, please see the Course Change| pages.

General Course

General Course students may apply to transfer to the third year of an LSE undergraduate degree in the academic year following their General Course programme.

After you have completed Request to Transfer Programme| form (also available in Word|), it should also be completed and signed by both the Dean of General Course Studies and the departmental tutor of the programme you hope to join. Please note that this degree transfer will be conditional and will depend on whether you meet the conditions outlined by the department.

The application will then be passed to the Undergraduate Studies Subcommittee (USSC) for consideration. After the form returns from the USSC we will inform you whether your conditional transfer application was successful. You will receive an email to this effect within 5 working days from that date (except during the main registration period in September/October when it may take longer).

If you are successful in your examinations, your General Course year will count as the second year of the degree you are transferring to and therefore the transfer will be backdated to October of the year you entered the General Course programme. In your third year you must take any of the papers 5-12 that you have not yet taken.

If unsuccessful, you will be unable to transfer and will be considered to have registered for the one year of the General Course programme only.

SSC will write to you again after the examination results have been published to confirm whether you have met the conditions or not. If you have been successful at that stage, you will be given further information about the financial guarantee and the fees.
