What to do if you have a problem

The School has a number of procedures which are designed to assist students if they have problems either academically or with the services that the School provides. 

If you are not sure which procedure to use, take a look at some of the most common types of problem| and what to do.

1. Students' Union welfare advisers

The SU Advice Centre is open Monday to Friday 10.30 – 16.30. A team of professional advisers are on hand to assist you with a range of issues including housing, immigration, applications to the SU hardship funds, visa extensions, employment problems, welfare benefits, grants, fee status and disability rights.

2. Adviser to female students

The Adviser is available to discuss issues of concern to women students in the School and to offer advice and support to women students with personal problems.

3. Adviser to male students

The Adviser is available to discuss issues of concern to male students and provides a confidential point of contact.  

4. Disability and Wellbeing Service 

The DWS provides a first point of contact for students and can give advice and information about disability issues and produce Independent Student Support Agreements. The Dyslexia Support Tutor provides advice, advocacy and support for students with dyslexia, according to individual needs. The members of the Office are listed below:

5. Disability and Diversity Consultative Forum

The Disability and Diversity Consultative Forum meets once a term and provides an opportunity to discuss disability and diversity issues at LSE. It is chaired by the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dr Jan Stockdale, and attended by staff from around the School, as well as students with a disability, special needs, dyslexia or a general interest in this area. Contact the Secretary to the Forum, Michelle Ward ( m.ward@lse.ac.uk |) if you are interested in attending or would like to suggest agenda items.

6. Deans of the School  

The Deans have a wide range of duties relating to the School's student community. They are available to any student who wishes to discuss academic or personal issues. The Deans also work closely with members of academic staff, including Academic Advisers/Supervisors, Departmental Tutors and Heads of Department, and with other support services across the School, such as the Disability and Wellbeing Service and the Teaching and Learning Centre, to help maximise students' learning potential and enhance the student experience. The Deans will see students by appointment or during their office hours which are published outside the Deans' Offices, OLD 2.04/OLD 2.02, on the second floor of the Old Building. Appointments can be booked through the Executive Assistant to the Deans.

7. Teaching and Learning Centre 

A list of counselling and other support staff can also be found on the website of the teaching and learning centre|. The Centre provides guidance on most aspects of the student experience, from one-to-one study support to advise on mental health and physical wellbeing.  

8. LSE Careers Service  

The LSE careers service| provides a varied and comprehensive careers guidance and employment service for students and staff seeking information on graduate employment and further study.

  1. Financial problems
    If you are facing financial difficulties due to changed circumstances contact the financial support office in Room OLD G.14 (Student Services Centre). 
  2. Emotional problems
    If you are under a lot of stress or experiencing emotional problems and need help, please get in touch with the Students' Union advice and counselling centre.  The LSE student counselling service is part of the LSE teaching and learning centre. The counselling service aims to enable students to cope more effectively with any personal or study difficulties that may be affecting them while at LSE.
  3. Medical problems
    If you are suffering from health problems contact the St Philips medical centre.
  4. Careers advice
    If you need career guidance contact the careers service.
  5. Student Services Centre

Student Services Centre
