Student welfare at LSE

  • The Disability Office offers support, practical advice and can facilitate special arrangements for those who have or feel they might have an ongoing or acute mental health problem (through the Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisers) or any other kind of disability, including learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. 
  • LSE students can receive welfare advice and also access counselling through The Students' Union Advice and Counselling Centre.
  •  The Financial Support Office can provide information on a range of sources of financial help.
  • The Volunteer Centre provides information and advice to students who are interested in volunteering, either for one-off or for longer term opportunities. Their website contains many links and different ideas.

International students


Study skills

  • Please look at handouts and videos from study skills sessions in Moodle .
  • Individual mentoring sessions and study skills advice are also available through the TLC Learning Support page.
  • Powerpoints and video podcasts from past presentations (Writing Workshop, Exams Workshop, Perfectionism, etc) are available on Groups and Workshops.

Stress management

  • The Counselling Service has produced a handout on Stress Management Techniques which is freely available for download.
  • If you want help with learning about relaxation and breathing techniques, you can listen to and download MP3 files here.
  • LSE has prepared a leaflet recommending a diet to minimize stress and maximise learning.

Students and young people

  • The student counselling website has a very useful list of practical help pages from different university web sites, linking to advice on dealing with common problems approached from a student perspective.
  • The Students Against Depression site contains information, resources and accounts written by many different students.
  • Much information and advice for 16 - 24 year olds can be found at www.thesite.org, which also includes factsheets, articles and on-line advice for young people.

Drugs and alcohol

  • Frank Confidential drugs information and advice 24 hrs a day
  • London drug and alcohol network (LDAN)  lists alcohol and drugs service in London boroughs
  • Drinkline 0800 917 82 82 Freephone helpline offering help and support on alcohol related issues
  • http://www.downyourdrink.org.uk  online programme to help people cut down and control drinking

Eating problems

  • The Institute of Psychiatry have a useful website on Eating Disorders, including much recent research findings on treatment and recovery.

Sexual assault

  • The Havens in London offer a range of medical, healthcare and emotional support for anyone who has been sexually assaulted.
  • Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre has a national freephone helpline 0808 802 9999, which is open every day 12.00 - 2.30 and 7.00 - 9.00 pm.

Black and minority ethnic groups

  • The Naz Project provides sexual health/HIV prevention and support services to Black and Minority Ethnic communities in London.
  • Karma Nirvana offers support to all victims of honour based abuse and forced marriage, and runs a Honour Network Helpline. To see the School policy on forced marriage click here.
  • MixTogether is an online help site for mixed couples (mixed race, religion, caste) whose relationships are opposed by family or community.
  • Dim Sum is a British Chinese community website, which includes both content and an active forum.

LGBT

  • London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard (helpline and information for gay and lesbian people)
  • The Pink Practice (a lesbian and gay counselling and psychotherapy service based in central London).
  • Imaan is a social support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Muslims, which offers advice and support through their website.

External and long-term therapy

  • We have produced a Counselling Resources List, which includes details of where you can get   low-cost counselling, group therapy and find registers for private counsellors.
  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (list of private therapists and organisations offering free counselling)
  • Low cost psychotherapy can be arranged through the Member Organisations of the UKCP. This link will take you to organisations which offer low cost psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
  • The main United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy website has more information about therapy, and can link you to their list of private therapists.
  • AGIP has a clinic offering low fee therapy called the Fairbridge Clinic - see their website for further details.
  • Longer term group psychotherapy is available through the Institute of Group Analysis and  The Women's Therapy Centre, costs are on a sliding scale £5 - £45.
  •  The Inner City Centre offers open-ended long term psychotherapy, group and couple therapy. Fees are linked to income, and are individually negotiated, and may start from £15 per session.

  • The Royal College of Psychiatrists has leaflets available via its website on problems such as sleep, stress, drug abuse and information about the management of a range of different difficulties.
