Who registers?
Some nationalities need to register with the police when they arrive in the UK. You only have to register if the sticker in your passport or your ID card says this. If you have permission to stay in the UK for less than six months, you won't need to register. You can check the list of nationalities at:
UK Border Agency website|
When to register
Every time you obtain a new Tier 4 (General) student visa, you must register with the police. This means if you obtain a new Tier 4 (General) visa overseas and enter the UK, you must report to the police within seven days of arriving. If you apply for a new visa inside the UK, you must report to the police within seven days of receiving your BRP card.
Returning to LSE for resit exams
If you return to the UK with a new Tier 4 (General) Student visa to take your exams, you also have to register again with the police if your visa is for longer than six months.
If you return to the UK as a Student Visitor, you will not have to register with the police.
How to register
You attend the Overseas Records Office in London to obtain a Police Registration Certificate. You will need this any time you need to apply to the UK Border Agency to extend your stay in the UK. You need to keep this certificate up to date with any changes.
It is a criminal offence not to register with the police if you are required to.
