LSE Archives is a major resource for the study of business history, especially from the mid-19th century onwards. Included are the papers of companies, business research organisations, industrialists and business historians. This guide highlights some of these archives.

People

  • Philip Walter Sawford Andrews (1914-71) and Elizabeth Brunner (1920-83), economists. Material collated during their research into industrial economics.
  • Theodore Cardwell Barker (1923-2001), economic historian. Includes research papers regarding glass manufacturing, airports and transport history.
  • Sir Hugh Eyre Campbell Beaver (1890-1967), civil servant, industrialist and engineer. Includes personal papers, correspondence and transcripts of lectures.
  • Duncan Lyell Burn (1902-88), journalist and economist. Includes material relating to the iron and steel industries, electricity and nuclear power; also, interviews with leading industrialists of the 1960s.
  • Sir Ronald Stanley Edwards (1910-76), academic and industrialist. Includes papers of the Seminar on problems in industrial administration and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Advisory Council.
  • George Elton Mayo (1880-1949), professor of industrial research. Correspondence.
  • William Piercy (1886-1966), 1st Baron Piercy, economist and banker. Personal and business papers.
  • Sir Arnold Plant (1898-1978), economist. Includes research papers, subject files and correspondence.
  • William Joseph Reader (1920-90), business historian. Research papers.
  • George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), author and playwright. Business papers. See our Shaw web page for more details.

Companies

  • Bell Brothers (reference: COLL MISC 0003): over 50 pay books of South Brancepeth Colliery, 1863-1905 and Clarence Iron Works, Middlesbrough, 1864-75.
  • William Brandt's Sons and Co, merchant bank: over 700 volumes relating to European, Russian and North and South American interests, 1814-1957.
  • Clayton and Morris Co, bank: 9 boxes of correspondence, c1553-c1823.
  • Ionian Bank: over 600 boxes of records, including reports, accounts, minute books, branch records and correspondence, c1835-1977. The bank's Court of Directors' minute books, 1839-1917, are available online.
  • Jones Lloyd and Company (COLL MISC 0004): 24 volumes of financial papers of this banking firm based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, 1829-1948.
  • Robert Newman and Co: over 100 volumes mainly regarding trade with Newfoundland, including letter books, financial records and shipping registers, 1774-1955.
  • Selection Trust: over 300 boxes, including the papers of Sir (Alfred) Chester Beatty, comprising extensive information on mining in various countries, administrative papers, photographs, notebooks and printed materials, c1906-c1980.
  • Steel Company of Wales (SCOW): around 200 boxes regarding Welsh steelworks, including statistical data and weekly reports from individual companies and works, 1928-1957.

Organisations

  • Management Research Group (later the Industrial Management Research Association). Includes minutes of meetings, reports and correspondence, 1927-78.
  • Nationalised Industries Chairmen's Group. Includes minutes, committee papers and reports, 1973-89.
  • National Institute of Industrial Psychology. Includes committee papers, correspondence and photographs, 1919-77.
  • Tariff Commission: papers regarding the possible effects of tariff reform on industries, 1903-25.

Other papers at LSE Archives

  • Papers relating to Charles Booth's Survey of Life and Labour of the People in London, includes much information relating to trade and industry in the capital, mainly 1890-1900s. For further information see the Charles Booth Online Archive, particularly the page about the Industry series of notebooks.
  • The records of the London School of Economics include papers regarding the Business Administration Department and the Business History Unit.
  • Papers collected by Beatrice and Sidney Webb for their 'History of Trade Unionism'; including mainly printed material relating to various trades and trade unions (19th-early 20th century).
  • Transport papers, including:
    a wide range of ephemera;
    the research papers of the canal historian, Charles Hadfield;
    papers relating to roads in the William Rees-Jeffreys archive;
    transport pamphlets, many of which have been digitised and are available online (see Transport pamphlets for further details);
    Bridges, canals, roads etc. in Scotland collection.
