Sources for local history at LSE Archives

LSE Archives holds many papers which may be of interest to local historians: search the Archives catalogue| for references to specific areas. The following list indicates the main sources (reference codes to the documents are in brackets).

  • Land Utilisation Survey maps
  • Election campaign literature from constituencies across the United Kingdom, early 19th onwards: for details see Election ephemera
  • For a list of the main papers regarding transport history, including railways, canals and roads use the advanced search facility on the archives catalogue (search for Transport in the Terms field)
  • Papers of MPs may include material on local matters
  • Materials on local government collated by Sidney and Beatrice Webb (WEBB LOCAL GOVERNMENT). This collection includes notes taken from parliamentary papers and acts, books, newspapers and local records
  • Materials on local trade unions collated by Sidney and Beatrice Webb (WEBB TRADE UNION)
  • Land Utilisation Survey, 1930-1938 (LUS). This survey gathered information about land use across England, Wales and Scotland, recorded at the scale of 6 inches to one mile using the County Series sheets produced by the Ordnance Survey
  • Local lesbian and gay groups (HCA): see Lesbian and gay papers at LSE Archives
  • Some of the printed works among the Rare Books collection relate to local history, especially the General Series

  • London Positivist Society, 1876-1974 (LONDON POSITIVIST SOCIETY)
  • 'Street Life in London' is a book of photographs of the poor in London in 1877 (SR 1146)
  • Information on working class living and working conditions was collected by Charles Booth and others for the Survey into Life and Labour in London, 1886-1903: for more information see the guide for local historians on the Charles Booth Online Archive.
  • Clapham Conservative Association, 1889-1949 (CCA)
  • Survey of life and labour in West Ham, 1890-1909 (OUTER LONDON INQUIRY)

  • Household account books showing the weekly expenses of a group of working class mothers and housewives in Lambeth, London, 1909-1913 (COLL MISC 0847)
