Catalogue of the papers of Brian Abel-Smith now online

Professor Brian Abel-Smith was professor of social administration at LSE, 1965-1991. As a consultant to the World Health Organisation and other institutions, he travelled to many countries advising on matters relating health economics. He was an active supporter of the Labour Party and a Special Adviser to Barbara Castle, Peter Shore and other Labour ministers. 

Over 140 boxes of personal papers have been deposited since the 1990s. These have now been listed, and are available on the online Archives Catalogue|.

The papers are of particular interest to those researching health economics, the history of the National Health Service, and the Labour Party in the 1970s and include:

  • Personal papers, diaries, correspondence and photographs
  • National Health Service papers, including files on research projects and publications such as, 'A History of the Nursing Profession' (1960) and 'The National Health Service: the first thirty years' (1978)
  • Papers for the reports, 'Social Policies and Population Growth in Mauritius' (1961) and 'A National Pension Scheme for Mauritius' (1976)
  • Material regarding health economics in countries outside the UK
  • Labour Party papers, including correspondence, memoranda and papers regarding the 1979 election campaign.
