Catalogue of the papers of the Campaign for an Independent Britain now online

The catalogue of the papers of the Campaign for an Independent Britain (CIB) is now available online through the Archives catalogue|.

The collection comprises material relating to the Campaign (1990-2007) and its predecessors: the Common Market Safeguard Campaign (1969-1976), the Safeguard Britain Campaign (1976-1982), and the British Anti-Common Market Campaign (1982-1989). It includes:

  • minutes of meetings of the Executive Committee and of the annual general meetings
  • press releases
  • press cuttings
  • pamphlets
  • leaflets
  • extensive correspondence consisting mainly of letters to and from Sir Robin Williams.

Included in the collection are also papers relating to other associated groups and organisations, particularly:

  • Anti-Common Market League, which became Get Britain Out in 2007 and is affiliated to CIB;
  • National Common Market Petition Council which, launched in 1970, collected over 750,000 signatures imploring the Queen to give her subjects the opportunity to express their opinion about joining the Common Market;
  • National Referendum Campaign (an umbrella organisation created to co-ordinate the efforts of the Anti-Common Market League, the Common Market Safeguard Campaign, and Get Britain Out).

The collection also comprises:

  • a complete set of the journal, 'Watchdog' (first published by the Common Market Safeguard Campaign, then Safeguard Britain Campaign and British Anti-Common Market Campaign)
  • issues of the journal, 'Britain' (published by the Anti-Common Market League)
  • issues of the newspaper, 'Resistance News' (published by the Common Market Safeguard Campaign)
  • a complete set of the newspaper, 'Independence' (published by CIB).
