A new accession of papers of European Nuclear Disarmament (END) has now been catalogued. The list is available online through the Archives Catalogue|.
END was one of the most influential peace groups during the 1980s. Its main aims were to free Europe from nuclear weapons and to end its involvement in the Cold War by breaking down the bloc system. END was particularly important for its liaison with, and support for, east European peace and human rights activists in the years before the end of the Cold War.
A new accession of END papers was deposited at LSE Archives in October 2008, bringing the total number of boxes in the collection to almost 90. All these papers have been catalogued.
Highlights of the new deposit include:
-
END subject files on topics such as the development of Labour Party defence policy; NATO; nuclear free zones; peace camps; and cooperation on defence matters in the Western European Union.
-
Files arranged by country regarding peace movements and peace issues in Western Europe (detailed files relating to peace movements in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union are available in the first END deposit).
-
Files regarding peace issues outside Europe, including: Afghanistan; east Asia and the South Pacific (such as China, Japan and New Zealand); Latin America; Libya, and the Middle East.
-
Papers of Lynne Jones, former Chairperson of END.
LSE Archives has other papers of peace groups, including an extensive Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) collection. For more information regarding our current project to catalogue the CND papers please see CND: The Story of a Peace Movement| or contact us: Contact details|
