Catalogue of the papers of the Modern Law Review now available

The catalogue of the papers of the Modern Law Review (MLR) is now available via the Archives Catalogue|.

Established in 1937 the MLR's main objectives are to promote legal education, and the study of law and all other arts and sciences which may be of interest to those involved in the study or practice of law. These aims are met through the publication of the law review, the organisation of lectures (including the annual Chorley lecture), seminars, scholarships and the giving of prizes that support legal education. The journal is one of Europe's leading scholarly periodicals and publishes original articles relating to various areas of law. The publication also includes book reviews, and sections on case analysis, recent legislation and reports.

The collection comprises correspondence and papers regarding the main functions of the MLR and is organised into four sections:

1. Correspondence and papers relating to the work of the Editorial Committee. The main activities of the MLR were undertaken by the Committee and subjects within the series include the journal, subscriptions and events held

2. Annual accounts and Directors' reports (1949-1986) with accompanying papers

3. Correspondence and papers regarding the content of the journal, mostly between the Editorial Committee, Bill Wedderburn (General Editor) and academics regarding articles submitted for inclusion in the journal. Also includes some correspondence and papers relating to individual editions from the mid 1970s

4. Papers regarding the annual Chorley Lecture. The lectures were introduced in 1972 to commemorate Lord Chorley's work as Editor for the MLR (1937-1971). The series includes correspondence with speakers and publicity material.

The collection mostly dates from the 1970s and 1980s, but there are also some earlier and later papers. All files have been closed for a period of ten years from the closure of the file. For further information about the collection please contact us: Contact details|
