Federalism

Federalism is a political philosophy which advocates that relations between states should be conducted under the rule of law and that different types of political issues need different institutions to deal with them. It is also a system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units.

A main principle of federalism is that of subsidiarity, that matters ought to be handled by the lowest least centralised unit or institution possible.

Federalism can be enacted at a regional, national, supranational or global level. The European Union is a form of federal government.
