'A poor thing, but our own': the Webbs and the Labour Party

The catalogue of the papers of the famous socialist couple Sidney and Beatrice Webb is now available via the Archives catalogue|. This exhibition has been created to celebrate this news, and to highlight some of the documents in the collection.

The archive contains 126 boxes of material relating to the Webbs' political, professional and personal lives. It includes Beatrice's original manuscript diaries, 1873-1943; correspondence with Joseph Chamberlain, George Bernard Shaw, H.G.Wells, William Beveridge, David Lloyd George and many others; photographs; articles; and, essays. It also includes papers on the foundation of LSE, and on the Webbs ongoing involvement with the School. In addition, there are around 650 volumes of research material and notes relating to their publications on local government and trade unionism.
