Economic theory

There are a number of pamphlets on aspects of economic theory including Keynesianism , laissez-faire and the free market, and marxist economics.
One 19th century example is  "Laissez-faire" by G.W. Bramwell of the Liberty and Property Defence League, 1884,  (HC/A2).
The Library holds editions of “Wage labour and capital”, 1886, (H/142), and “Value, price and profit”, 1900, (H/66), both by Karl Marx. Other pamphlets on marxist economics include;- “Marx’s theory of value” by H. Hyndman, 1900, (HX/145) and “Marx et l’économie classique”, 1934, (H/C23).
There are numerous pamphlets by Keynes including "The economic consequences of Mr Churchill", 1925, (HG/B425) and, in German "Das Ende des Laissez-faire", 1926, (H/D24). There are many others about Keynesian economics.
H. Johnson wrote "The Keynesian revolution and the monetarist counter revolution", 1970, (FOLIO fH/F176) and M.L. Bernstein "Mr Keynes and the neo-classics", 1965, University of Birmingham, (FOLIO fH/F93). The Institute for Economic Affairs issued "Keynes v the Keynesians" by T.W. Hutschison, 1977, (H/B224) and "From Galbraith to economic freedom", by M. Friedman, 1977. (H/B185). 
There was a significant amount of material published in the 1980s and 1990s on free enterprise. The Institute of Directors published "Free enterprise :the only way out", 1981, (HD3616.G7 I51). The No Turning Back Group of Conservative MPs issued "Choice and responsibility: the enabling state",  in 1990, (HB95 C54).

Depressions and economic crises

Pamphlets published in the 19th century include:-"The depression of trade, its causes and its remedies", by A. Wallace, 1886, (BP210345),M(PAMPHLETS 65),  "The financial and commercial crisis considered" by A. Baring, 1847, (BP171722), M(PAMPHLETS 40), and "Depression  of trade " by J.L. Shadwell, published by the Liberty and Property Defence League, 1885, (HD3/D52).
In 1908 A. Kitson wrote "Is a money crisis imminent?", published by the New Reform Club, (HG/405).
Sir G. Parish wrote "The world crisis: a suggested remedy", 1921, (HC/D4) and R. Bosch "The prevention of the future economic world crisis", 1932, (H/D233).
There are also a number of German publications including: "Die Wirtschaftskrise" by J. Hirsch, 1931, (CHAT K3/74).
C. Sweet wrote "World economic crisis: an analysis of economic, political and military factors", 1976, (HF/B282) , P. Green "Why the world economy is in crisis", SWP, (HB3711 G79) and E. Grant "Will there be a slump?", WIR Publications, 1967, (HC256.5 G76).

Economic planning

The shift in economic policy towards economic planning was a 20th century phenonomen, but there are a couple of 19th century publications on economic planning, for example;- “On the regulation of production”, a letter by R.S. Moffat, 1880, (H/D230) and “The basis of the demand for public regulation of industries”, by W. Dabrey,  published by the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences,  1892, (HD3/D87).
 Most of the pamphlets advocating economic planning were published in the 1930s and 1940s. F. Henderson wrote “Planning or chaos” published by the Labour Party in 1938, (JF2(42S)/189), M(PAMPHLETS 361), L. Van Mises and R. Tucker “Economic planning” in 1945, (CHAT F4/106), H.J. Laski "Will planning restrict freedom?", (HF(42)/262), M(PAMPHLETS 402), H. Henderson “The uses and abuses of economic planning”, 1947, (H/624), and Political and Economic Planning issued “Employment for all”, 1944, (HD5/299).  C.P. Mayhew of the Fabian Society wrote "Socialist economic planning :the overall picture", 1946, (HX/D44). W. Aldrich wrote "The incompatibility of democracy and a "planned" economy", 1939, (HF/228), M(PAMPHLETS 386).
There were further pamphlets about economic planning in Britain in the 1960s. For example: "Liberals and economic planning",  by D. Banks, 1963 (Unservile state papers), (JF2(42L)/D44), "Conservatives and economic planning", by Sir E. Boyle, 1966, (JF2(42C)/C20), and "Economic planning in the UK: some lessons ", by E. Robinson,  1967, (HF(42)/C60). Sir E. Phelps Brown wrote "Indicative economic planning in the UK", 1969, (HF(42)/B76) and J. Marshall "The role of government in the economy", published by the Aims of Industry,  1970, (HF(42)/B83). 
Examples of pamphlets on  economic planning from other countries include:- "Economic problems of the post-war world: democratic planning for full employment", by H.A. Hansen, 1942, (HD5/329), (Problems in American Life no.10) and "Government economic planning" by B.M. Anderson, published by the American Economic Association, 1940, (HF(7)/93), M(PAMPHLETS 417). R. Hsia wrote "Economic planning in Communist China", published by the Institute of Pacific Relations, 1955, (HF(5)/D2). There are also a number of pamphlets on economic planning in France, the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Cuba, Pakistan and other developing countries.  The Centre for Research into Communist Economies published by M. Friedman "Market or plan: an  exposition of the case for the market, critical comment by A. Nove", 1984, (HF5415 F91).

Economic history

There are hundreds of pamphlets on the history of the British economy. One of the earliest held by the Library is "The state and the nation in respect to her commerce, debts and money", 2nd ed., 1731, (BP168452),M(PAMPHLETS 36). W. Playfair wrote "For the use of the enemies of Britain; a real statement of the finances and resources of Great Britain-illustrated by two copper plate charts", 1796, (HC(42)/27).
 Developments in the 20th century are documented in "The seven lean years" by H. Hodgkinson, 1939, (HF(42)/140) and "The state of the nation: an economic survey in pictoral form" by M. Abrams, published by the Bureau of Current Affairs, 1947, (HC(42)/60). In 1957 the Federation of British Industries published "Britain's economic problems and policies", 1957, (HF(42)/D44).
There were many publications in the 1970s and 1980s, including "Britain: workshop or service centre to the world" by S. Medlik, 1977, (HF(42)/B225). Sir G. Howe wrote "The right approach to the economy" published by Conservative Central Office, 1977, (JN1129.C7 R57). G.C. Allen wrote "The British disease: short essay on the nature and causes of the nation's lagging wealth", published by the Institute of Economic Affairs, 1976, (HC(42)/B24), and D.G. Rowan wrote "Implementing monetarism: some reflections on the British experience", 1981, (HG939.5 R57)

The Labour Research Department published "A state of collapse: the UK economy under the Tories", 1987, (HC256.6 L12).
Later publications published in the 1990s include;- "Managing the economy- towards 2000", published by the Trades Union Congress, 1990, (HC256.6 T76),  "The economics of John Smith" by M. Portillo, 1992, (HC256.6 S65), "Fair ie efficient: a socialist agenda for fairness" by G. Brown, published by the Fabian Society, 1994, (COLL P.2155) and "Making Britain's future" published by the Labour Party, 1993, (COLL.P.663). P. Hennessy and C. Anstey wrote "From clogs to clogs: Britain's relative economic decline since 1851", published by the University of Strathclyde, (HC253 H51). 

There are many pamphlets on the history of the French economy including ;-"Cri de misere" by C. Marchal, 1848 (BP196780),M(PAMPHLETS 58), "La situation économique comparée de la France et l'étranger", 1903, (HC(44)/B1) and "Les perspectives de l'économie française", 1947, (HC(44)/E2).
Publications on the economic history of Germany cover the debt reparations of the 1920s, the economic collapse of the 1930s, the Nazi regime and post war reconstruction.  A few examples include;- "Wirtschaftskrisis und Sozialpolitik", by H. Brauns, 1924, (CHAT K3/99) and "Die Wirtschaftskrise in Deutschland" by M.Muss, 1932, (HC(43)/14). There is a series of pamphlets published by the Transfer Committee Economic Service on debt and reparations in the 1920s. "Die neuen Aufgaben der deutschen Volkwirtschaft" by B. Kiesewetter was published in 1937, (HF(43)/25). On the subject of post-war reconstruction there is "The future of Germany" by A. Whyte, published by Fabian Publications, 1947, (HC(43)/48) and "Die deutsche Wirtschaft und der Marshallplan", 1950, (HF(43)/78), M(PAMPHLETS 409).

There are hundreds of pamphlets on the economic history of the United States from the 19th century to the present day. "American competition", 2nd ed. By M. Frewen was published in 1885, (HC(7)/D6). B. Thwaite wrote "The American invasion; or, England's commercial danger and the triumphal progress of the United States, with remedies proposed to enable England to preserve her industrial position", 1902, (HC(7)/B12). W. Beveridge wrote "Observations in America", 1933, (HC(7)/19).
There are a number of publications on the New Deal in the 1930s. These include;-"The Roosevelt plan", by J.C. Stamp, 1934, (HF(7)/D24), "The Roosevelt experiment", by H.J. Laski, 1933, (HF(7)/18), M(PAMPHLETS 414) and "American ideals versus the New Deal", by H. Hoover, 1936, (HF(7)/52), M(PAMPHLETS 415). R. Dill wrote a "Plan for America", 1945, (HF(7)/121), M(PAMPHLETS 418).
Later publications on the USA economy include; "Japanese capitalism, Anglo-Saxon capitalism - how will the Darwinian contest turn out?", LSE. Centre for Economic Performance, 1992, (COLL P.199).
There are significant collections of pamphlets on the economic histories of other countries particularly Italy, Japan, Latin America and Australasia.
