Members of the public

Members of the public doing private, non-commercial research may apply for reference access to the Library on production of the necessary proof of address and ID. 

Please ensure you bring the correct ID and documentation with you on your visit, and your proof of address is less than 3 months.  Membership will not be provided without the relevant documentation and ID, and we cannot provide entrance to the Library until  the appropriate documentation and ID are produced.  

To apply for membership, you will need to provide proof of address and personal ID:

 Acceptable proof of address (must be less than 3 months old):

  • Utility Bill (Gas, Electricity, Telephone, Water)
  • Bank/Building Society Statement (must be statement or letter referring to account)
  • Visa/Mastercard Credit Card Statement (store cards not accepted) 
  • Mobile phone bill
  • Council tax bill/council tax payment book

Please note we do not accept provisional driving licenses, medical cards, tenancy agreements, or confirmation on unheaded paper.

Acceptable personal ID:  

  • Passports
  • National ID Cards
  • UK College and University ID
  • Bank Credit or Debit Card
  • Staff ID Card
  • ID cards from private colleges
  • Photo oyster cards

Please note that Study Permits do not provide access to Course Collection material during LSE term time - this is reading list material reserved for use by LSE staff and students.
