Returning and Recalled items

Inter-library loan is a reciprocal system which can be placed in jeopardy through items consistently being returned late or damaged.  We therefore ask the following:
  • That the item is returned by the date stated on the receipt slip
  • That items are returned to the service counter and not the drop box to ensure that they are not damaged
  • That items are not defaced or damaged in any way

In the event of items being returned late or damaged, you could be subject to a charge of £129.50 + VAT.  This is the current British Library rate for replacement items and cannot be negotiated.  A higher charge may be made if the item is expensive to replace.

Any charges made to the Library as a result of the above will be passed onto the user.

Reference only items must be returned to the service counter before it close each evening.  When returning reference only material, please indicate to counter staff if you have finished with the item or would like to consult it again.

All reference only and uncollected material is returned to the lending library when they reach their due date unless the IDD department has been instructed otherwise.

Supplier Recalls

Lending libraries can recall material at any time.  When this happens we will inform you and provide a new due date via the catalogue.  It is important that when items are recalled, that they are returned promptly otherwise, you could be subject to a charge of £129.50 + VAT as described above.

The charges and conditions outlined on this page apply to all LSE Staff and Students including those who are normally exempt from paying Library fines.
