i-roam - the LSE laptop loan service
Students and staff can now "borrow" laptops in the LSE Library. The laptops, which automatically connect to LSE's wireless network, provide access to H: space, office software and the internet. They can be borrowed for up to 6 hours at a time and need to be issued via the self-service machines in the Course Collection.
Who can use an i-roam laptop?
LSE students and staff with a network username and password.
Where can I find an i-roam laptop?
i-roam laptops are stored in blue charging cabinets on the ground floor in the Course Collection area.
Where can I use an i-roam laptop?
Anywhere in the Library but please don't take it out of the Library.
How do I use an i-roam laptop?
1. Just pick up an available laptop from the charging cabinets in the Course Collection.
2. Issue the laptop to your account using the Course Collection self-service machines.
3. Open the lid and slide the power button, which is located on the right-hand side at the front of the laptop. When prompted, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, then click on Other User.
4. Enter your LSE username and password to log on to your account and the wireless network. It may take some time for the desktop to be displayed. Please be patient.
5. When you've finished using the laptop, log off and close the lid. Please return it at a Course Collection self-service machine and plug it back into the charging cabinet for recharge.
How do I know if the laptop battery is charged when I take a laptop?
If the green light on the charging cabinet is lit, then the laptop is fully charged. If the red light is lit, the laptop is not fully charged. When you return an i-roam laptop to a cabinet please remember to plug the power cables back in.
What can I use an i-roam laptop for?
You can use an i-roam laptop to access the internet, office software, your H:space, and to print.
What if I want to use specialist software?
If you want to use specialist software, such as Endnote or SPSS, you should use one of the 500 PCs in the Library, which have the full suite of LSE applications installed on them and provide high speed access to the LSE network.
What do I do if an i-roam laptop does not appear to work properly?
If the laptop you have borrowed does not work properly, please give it to a member of IT Help Desk| staff and take another one from one of the blue charging cabinets
What should I do if an i-roam laptop loses signal to the lsesecurewifi network?
If the signal for lsesecurewifi drops, log on to the lsebasicwifi network and tick the box to automatically reconnect.
Are there any rules I should be aware of?
1. Do not save any files to the desktop or local hard drive as they will be deleted. Instead, save your files to My Documents (H:space) or a USB memory stick.
2. Do not leave laptops unattended, as they may be claimed by another user or shut down and returned to the charging cabinet. If you are going to another part of the Library, take the laptop with you and when you leave, please log off, close the lid and plug it in to a charging cabinet.
