You can add references into an EndNote library from various online resources such as electronic indices, library catalogues and electronic journals|. This enables you to create large libraries very quickly as the references are not keyed in field by field. However, depending on the source of the records, editing is sometimes required after downloaded references have been imported in order to make them tidy and consistent.
Adding references can be done via a number of methods:
-
Connecting directly from Endnote which is known as connecting method
-
Importing results into Endnote after saving results from the relevant database using the appropriate import filter in Endnote
-
Direct export of results from the database into Endnote without the import filter
The relevant methods and databases are outlined below. Please note that all the databases below have been tested using the standard School build and that not all databases that the Library subscribes to are Endnote compatible (e.g. Westlaw and Lexis)
The instructions for JSTOR, Periodical Archive Online, ScienceDirect and Wiley Online Library can be found on the page for electronic journals|.
Cross Searcher
Some resources do not offer an Endnote download option from their own search pages. However you can download references from these using Cross Searcher|.
Note that references are downloaded as the 'generic' reference type so you must edit these-see the Cross Searcher| page for further help

Connecting and downloading
EndNote allows you to connect to online databases directly. You then search the remote source through EndNote (using one of its Connection Files) and having downloaded the required references into a temporary file transfer the ones you want to keep to a new or existing EndNote library.

Medline via Pubmed
How to connect:
-
From the Endnote Tools menu choose Connect.
-
From the menu which appears either select a database which is listed (such as 'London School of Econ' for the Library Catalogue) or select 'Connect' for other ones. If you select Connect, the Choose a Connection File dialog box opens. Choose the database you wish to connect to from the list and click on the Connect button. EndNote will connect and offer you its Search dialog box to search the database. Just click through any error messages that may appear prior to clicking on Connect button.
-
Enter your search terms in the search box.
-
Click on Search. The references will be automatically added to your library
-
Select the references you wish to delete via the Online Search option in the left hand side bar. Once highlight press CTRL + D to delete them
Importing downloaded references
Some databases allow you to save search results in a file which can then be imported into Endnote. This is useful if Endnote cannot directly connect to a database, or if you wish to use the advanced search facilities of a particular database. Your results file can then be imported into an EndNote library using a pre-set Import Filter File. The filter enables EndNote to recognise and deal with the field structure of the downloads, so importing by this method can only take place when a relevant filter exists and when the information has been saved correctly.
OCLC FirstSearch Databases via Importing method
The importing method allows you to search OCLC databases and save results for later import-this is particularly useful if you are accessing these databases on a PC without access to Endnote.
