Cross Searcher enables you to search several of the Library's databases together, even if they are provided by different companies. If you wish to run complex searches, or to include information in Endnote such as abstracts or keywords then you may choose to search the databases individually|.
In Cross Searcher
-
Run your search in Cross Searcher as usual
-
When the results appear you can choose those you wish to save by clicking in the check boxes next to each result
-
Click on Export/Save
-
Choose In a format compatible with EndNote, ProCite
-
Click on Export
-
Results will then appear in an Endnote compatible format - Click on the grey Save Records button and a Save/Dialogue box will appear.
-
Choose Save - you will need to change the defaults
-
Save your file with the file extension .ris You will need to overwrite the default which is to a .txt file e.g. change results.txt to results.ris
-
Make sure to change the Save as type option from text document to All files
In Endnote
-
Open your Endnote library
-
From the Endnote File menu choose Import
-
Click on the Choose File button and navigate to your file of downloaded references from the Open dialog box. Select the relevant file e.g. records.ris and click on the Open button. The Import Data File box will show the name of the file selected for import.
-
From the Import Option drop down list select the Refernce Manager (RIS) filter option
-
Click on the Import button. Your results will be imported but must be edited as per below
Correcting Reference Types
Because of the nature of the data, Cross Searcher will transfer your records into Endnote as the Generic Reference type and you must change this to the correct reference type, usually Journal article, but you should check your references carefully as you may also have book chapters, books etc.
If you have only a few references you can edit these manually by opening up each reference individually and changing the Reference type at the top
You can also make global changes to large numbers of references:
-
Make sure only those references you wish to change are visible
-
Choose Edit/Change text
-
Select Reference type from the drop down menu
-
In the Search for box type in the name of the incorrect reference type e.g. Generic
-
In the Change the text to box type in the name of the correct reference type e.g. Journal Article
-
Click on the Change button-you will see a confirmation button as you cannot undo the changes
Reference types are case sensitive so you must enter the information precisely e.g. Generic and not generic
Moving Information from one field to another
Sometimes the Journal title may transfer into the incorrect field- e.g. the Alternate Title field. You can correct this manually but you can also make global changes to large groups of records
-
Make sure only those references you wish to change are visible
-
Choose References/Change and Move Fields
-
Select the Move Fields tab. In the From field enter the name of the field where the data currently is e.g. Alternate Title. In the To field enter the name of the correct field e.g. Journal/Secondary title. Click on Ok and your data should move into the correct fields
Because of the nature of the data some of the Journal titles may transfer in upper case. See our advice on editing references in upper case|
